The summer season is almost upon us, and the Regina Police Service is emphasizing the importance of adopting crime prevention techniques to deter theft-from-auto. From June 1 to June 13, 2018, 98 theft-from-auto incidents have been reported. Each season presents different opportunities where theft-from-auto crimes can occur, and we continue to encourage the public to reduce those opportunities and avoid becoming victims of crime.
In the early morning hours of June 13, 2018, an estimated $10,000 worth of equipment was stolen from a vehicle parked on the 1500 block of Pasqua Street. While this particular incident involved a significant monetary loss, all theft-from-auto incidents can be grievous. Sunglasses can be replaced but heirloom jewelry or family photos may not get recovered. If you want to keep it, remove it from your vehicle.
The Regina Police Service encourages all vehicle owners to mitigate theft-from-auto opportunities by practicing some simple strategies:
- If at all possible, park in well-lit, non-secluded areas.
- Lock your vehicle and take your keys. Do not leave spare keys hidden in your vehicle, as thieves will check the usual hiding spots.
- Thieves can only take what’s left behind, so the only way to be absolutely certain they won’t take your valuable items from your vehicle is to take those valuables and store them in a more secure place.
