Two males face charges after an apparent bear-spray incident in downtown Regina this morning.
On January 30, 2018, at approximately 10:00 a.m., police were dispatched to a shopping mall entrance on the 2100 block of 11th Avenue. Information received was that a group of males were in an altercation in front of the mall entrance, and as a result of the altercation, a 31 year-old male was sprayed with what is believed to be bear-spray.
Police arrived and one of the group believed to be involved in the altercation, a 30 year-old male, was located and arrested. A search revealed a knife, and the 30 year-old male was subsequently charged. The bear-spray believed to be used in this incident was not recovered.
EMS arrived on scene and a cursory search by police of the victim sprayed by the bear-spray, a 31 year-old male, revealed a knife. After treatment by EMS the male was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon. After being lodged in police cells, it was discovered that the male provided a false name to police. The male was identified and found to be the subject of a warrant for arrest for breach of statutory release, and the male was charged with obstruction.
Thirty-one year-old Derek JOHNSTON, of Regina, is charged with:
- Carrying concealed weapon [CC 90];
- Obstruct peace officer [CC 129(A)]; and
- Unlawfully at large [CC 145(1)(B)].
Thirty year-old Brandon Patrick DERMODY, of Regina, is charged with:
- Carrying concealed weapon [CC 90].
JOHNSTON and DERMODY make their first appearances on these charges in Provincial Court tomorrow, January 31, 2018, at 9:30 a.m.
