A Regina Police Service member discharged a CEW, commonly known as a Taser, in the apprehension and arrest of a thirty-one year-old Regina male on Sunday December 31, 2017.
On December 31, 2017, at approximately 11:30 pm, Regina Police Service members observed a male openly carrying a weapon (knife) on 5th Avenue at McTavish Street. Officers approached the male who then covered his face and reached for the weapon. The male was resistant and would not listen to police commands, a police officer discharged a CEW and the male was successfully taken into custody after a brief physical altercation.
The male was assessed by EMS at the scene and transported to hospital for further assessment and release from hospital. The male was then transported to RPS detention and subsequently charged.
Thirty one year-old Gabriel COTE, of Regina, is charged with Possession of Weapon For Dangerous Purpose sec 88 CC, Carrying Concealed Weapon sec 90 CC and Resist Arrest sec 129(a) CC. He was released with conditions to attend Provincial Court on February 12th, 2018.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee, a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission.
