Two male youths have been charged with Attempted Murder in connection with an attack on a 16 year-old male which occurred on Thursday, July 6, 2017, in the 2800 block of 6th Avenue. A member of the public was, unfortunately, injured by a police dog while police were in pursuit of the suspects last night.
This investigation began at approximately 3:24 a.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2017. Two police officers on patrol came across a group of people gathered around a male, who was lying in the street in the 2800 block of 6th Avenue. The officers were on an unrelated call for service at the time. The officers requested EMS and the male, later identified as a 16 year-old, was taken to hospital with head injuries described as serious. The victim remains in hospital at this time. Investigation into this incident led to identification of viable suspects in this case. At approximately 9:00 p.m., police were dispatched to a suspicious person call in the area of 3rd Avenue and Rae Street. The person matched the description of one of the suspects in the Attempted Murder file. Police made entry into a residence in the 1100 block of Angus Street and arrested a 16 year-old male. The second suspect, a 17 year-old male was arrested a short time later. The search for the second suspect involved use of the Canine unit and, in the course of tracking the suspect through a residential area, a police canine dog made contact with a member of the public who was not involved in the investigation. The dog bite will be subject to review by the Use of Force Review Committee and, upon conclusion of the review, will be dealt with appropriately.
