The Regina Police Service is advising the public of the discharge of a CEW, commonly known as a taser, on Monday March 13, 2017, in the arrest of a 46 year-old Regina male, who was behaving in a threatening manner, attempting to flee, and disobeying police commands. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
At approximately 11:37 p.m., police were involved in a foot pursuit in the 2200 block of Halifax Street after a male suspect fled from a vehicle there. The male had previously evaded police when they attempted to initiate a vehicle stop. Officers located the man on the street in the area of 2200 block Halifax St. at which time the foot pursuit began. The man ran back to his vehicle and attempted to drive away. He was non-compliant with officers. The male’s actions indicated he was potentially dangerous and may harm someone including the officers. The CEW was deployed and he was taken safely into custody. The male was medically cleared for physical injury by EMS at the scene before being transported to cells at the Regina Police Service.
The male was unharmed during the incident and was not injured as a result of the CEW deployment. The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
A search of the male revealed a loaded firearm, bear spray, and drugs in his possession.
The investigation is ongoing and a list of charges will be available once it is complete.
