On Wednesday, January 18th, 2017, a Regina Police Service member discharged a CEW, commonly known as a taser, in an arrest. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
At 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18th, 2017, the Regina Police Service received a warrant for an adult male residing on Hanbridge Crescent. Officers arrived and located the male inside the home. When the male learned why officers were attending to his home, he attempted to slam the door on the officers. The male then quickly opened the door and rushed at the officers. Both officers deployed their Conducted Energy Weapons, or CEWs, however, only one CEW made contact. The male was safely taken into custody without further incident, and transported to the hospital by EMS.
The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee with the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
