A Regina Elementary School, Henry Janzen School, 222 Rink Avenue, was very briefly in “Secure the Building” mode while police investigated a potential threat.
On November 29, 2016, at approximately 11:20 a.m., police were dispatched to a residence on the 100 block of Rink Avenue for the report of a firearm threat. A complainant had witnessed a male with what he believed to be a firearm. Police contacted school officials, who had already issued the “Secure the Building” mode as a precaution after witnessing police nearby.
Within minutes, police had secured the area, and apprehended two suspects. No firearms were recovered. No one was injured in this incident. The “Secure-the-Building” mode was lifted at the school some time thereafter.
Charges may be pending for at least one of the males apprehended.
It is important to understand the terminology and actions taken by authorities. “Secure the Building”: Is a situation where it is believed a threat is currently outside the building resulting in the decision to secure the school whereby all outside doors will be locked to secure the building. Each exterior door is to be monitored by designated school staff until Secure the Building mode has been lifted. Entry and exit of the building will be at the front doors only and are to be monitored by police and school administration. Regular interior school activities continue in a controlled manner.
