Two elementary schools and a high school in East Regina were placed in Secure-the-Building* mode for a short period this afternoon, while police searched the area for a suspect in a vehicle mischief incident. The heightened security came from an initial report of a possible gun in the suspect’s hand, but when police located the individual, he was not in possession of any firearm.
This incident began at 2:50 p.m. on Monday, April 25, 2016, when police received a call from a staff member at an east Regina elementary school in the 2800 block of Dewdney Avenue. The caller indicated that a young male smashed the window of vehicle and then fled on foot with an object in hand. One of the witnesses to the event thought the object might be a gun. Police obtained a positive identification of the suspect. A public high school was initially placed in Secure-the-Building mode so that students could be dismissed in an orderly fashion, with police and school staff monitoring. Two elementary schools in the area remained in Secure-the-Building mode until more was known. Police located the suspect and arrested him without incident. He was not in possession of any firearm.
The male youth will be charged in connection with the mischief and damage to the vehicle. The Regina Police Service thanks the public for its patience in this matter. The Regina Police Service would also like to acknowledge and thank the Regina Board of Education, Regina Catholic Schools and the city’s private schools for their co-operation and partnership in developing – and regularly practicing – safety plans for Regina students and staff.
* “Secure the Building”: Is a situation where it is believed a threat is currently outside the building resulting in the decision to secure the school whereby all outside doors will be locked to secure the building. Each exterior door is to be monitored by designated school staff until Secure the Building mode has been lifted. Entry and exit of the building will be at the front doors only and are to be monitored by police and school administration. Regular interior school activities continue in a controlled manner.
