On Saturday January 30, 2016 Regina Police Service members discharged a CEW commonly known as a Taser in the apprehension and arrest of a 41 year-old Regina male. This advisory is in keeping with the Regina Police Service’s commitment to notify the public each time a CEW is discharged against a person.
At approximately 1:48 p.m. on Saturday, January 30th, 2016, police were dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Toronto Street for a report of a male who was involved in a domestic disturbance. The first officer arrived on scene and learned there was a 41-year-old male inside the residence who was extremely agitated and a female for whom there were safety concerns. The officer assessed the situation understanding there was a need for immediate control given the high risk of harm for the female in the house. Once inside the residence, the male refused to comply with police commands, threw a kitchen fridge to the ground toward the officer and became extremely aggressive. The officer then deployed his CEW as other officers arrived and they were then able to gain control of the male, taking him into custody without further incident. A patrol supervisor attended to the residence and EMS transported the 41 year-old male to the hospital for assessment as per policy after the deployment of a CEW.
The male was arrested for breach of the peace. The Regina Police Service and other community support systems are continuing to take steps to ensure future safety for the family involved in this domestic violence situation. The male was unharmed during the incident and was not injured as a result of the CEW deployment. The use of the CEW has been documented as per policy and will be reviewed by a Use of Force Committee – a committee within the Service. All uses of force are also reported to the Saskatchewan Police Commission – an oversight body independent of the Regina Police Service.
