The Regina Police Service, working in conjunction with the Moose Jaw Police Service, has laid numerous charges and recovered stolen firearms, ammunition, a truck and cash in connection with investigation into a recent theft from a residence in Moose Jaw.
This investigation began with an incident of Break, Enter and Theft, sometime the night of December 2-3, at a Moose Jaw residence, in which five firearms, ammunition, a Ford F-150 truck, cash, jewelry and other personal items were stolen from the victim’s garage. Members of the Regina Police Service Investigative Response Unit learned of the possibility that some of the stolen items were in Regina. Their investigation, carried out in conjunction with the Moose Jaw Police Service, led to the following activities:
– Two high-risk search warrants, carried out by SWAT and Negotiators, on December 3, 2015 at addresses in the 800 and 900 blocks of Rae Street. Stolen property recovered: one firearm, some ammunition, Ford F150 truck, some cash;
– On December 4, 2015, a high-risk search warrant was executed by SWAT and Negotiators at a residence on Transcona Place. Stolen property recovered: a substantial amount of ammunition and a scope for a rifle;
– On December 4, 2015, a search warrant was prepared for a Moose Jaw residence (River Street East) and carried out by Moose Jaw Police Service. Stolen property recovered: two shotguns;
– On December 5, 2015, police obtained consent to search an address on Merrit Crescent. Stolen property recovered: a rifle;
– On December 5, 2015, a search warrant was obtained for a residence on Barr Street. Stolen property recovered: a shotgun.
During the course of this investigation, a total of nineteen people were taken into custody to be interviewed. The following individuals have been charged:
Nineteen year-old Darren Blair McNAB, DOB: 1996-11-10, of Regina, is facing 14 charges, including:
– Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000, sec. 355(b) CC;
– Five charges of Possession of a Firearm, sec. 96(1) CC;
– Five charges of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, sec. 91(1) CC; and
– Two charges of Weapons Trafficking, sec. 99 CC.
Eighteen year-old Braiden Shade HOTOMANI, DOB: 1997-10-21, of Regina, is facing eleven charges, including:
– Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose (knife), sec. 88 CC;
– Two charges of Possession of a Firearm contrary to Order, sec. 117.01(1) CC;
– Possession of a Firearm, sec. 96(1) CC;
– Two charges of Careless Use/Storage of Firearm/Ammunition, sec. 86(1) CC;
– Two charges of Breach of Undertaking, sec. 145(3) CC.
Eighteen year-old Emile HOTOMANI, DOB: 1997-03-30, of Regina is facing five charges, including:
– Careless Use/Storage of Firearm, sec. 86(1) CC
– Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, sec. 91(1) CC;
– Two charges of Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000, sec. 355(b) CC; and
– Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking a Controlled Substance, sec. 5(2) CDSA.
A 17 year-old male youth, who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is facing a total of eight charges, including:
– Three charges of Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000, sec. 355(b) CC;
– Possession of Stolen Property over $5,000 (truck), sec. 355(a) CC;
– Careless Use/Storage of Firearm, sec. 86(1) CC
– Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, sec. 91(1) CC;
– Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking a Controlled Substance, sec. 5(2) CDSA; and
– Fail to Comply with Court ordered condition, sec. 137 YCJA.
The 17 year-old youth and Emile HOTOMANI made their first court appearances on Friday, December 4, 2015. Both Darren Blair McNAB and Braiden Shade HOTOMANI appeared in Provincial Court this morning: Monday, December 7, 2015.
Investigation into these matters is ongoing. Without offering comment on this particular incident, this investigation serves as a reminder to gun-owners to ensure that all firearms are securely and safely stored.
