The Regina Police Service wishes to advise the media and the public that the Service’s Underwater Investigation and Recovery Team, or UIRT, is on site at Wascana Lake this afternoon as part of an investigation, after receiving a concern that there was a hole in the ice and some tracks were visible around the opening. The Regina Police has NOT received any witness accounts of anyone falling through the ice, nor any reports of persons unaccounted for or missing, but it is incumbent upon police to investigate as thoroughly as possible.
At approximately 11:30 a.m. today, Thursday, December 3, 2015, the Regina Police Service received a citizen concern about an open hole in the ice at Wascana Centre. The information received also indicated that there may be bicycle tracks and footprints in the area. Police attended the area and did not find evidence that anyone had entered the water; however, it was decided that a more thorough investigation, including an underwater search, should be conducted. The search is being carried out by trained members of the Underwater Investigation and Recovery Team, or UIRT, in conjunction with Wascana Centre Authority, with the assistance of Regina Fire and Protective Services.
There is not an indication, at this time, that there has been any mishap at this site. Further details will be made public at the completion of the investigation.
