A 14 year-old male has been charged with False Messages and Mischief after investigation into an incident at a Regina high school, today.
On Wednesday, September 23, 2015, at approximately 11:00 a.m., police received information, via a third party, that a 14 year-old student had made remarks about bringing a gun to school. With the help of school administration, police investigated the information thoroughly, including a search of the individual, school property and the student’s home (with the consent of the homeowner). As a result of investigation, police were satisfied that the male did not have access to firearms and did not have the intention of acting on his comments. However, the evidence gathered does support charges against the male youth.
The 14 year-old will not be named in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is charged with conveying False Messages, section 372(1) CC; and Mischief, section 430(1)(c) CC. The youth was released on an Officer’s Undertaking and will make an appearance in Youth Court on Wednesday, November 18, 2015.
The Regina Police Service takes such allegations seriously and reminds residents that it’s only through investigation that police can determine whether or not an overheard comment is a threat to public safety. We commend those who report their concerns so they can be investigated. At the same time, the Regina Police Service strongly discourages anyone from making casual comments which could be interpreted as threats to public safety. Even if such comments are found to be made as a joke, a person may face criminal charges.
