A 26 year-old Regina male is facing numerous weapons-related charges after a traffic stop led to the discovery of an assault rifle, a high-capacity magazine and ammunition.
On the afternoon of August 30, 2015, police were conducting laser speed enforcement for traffic-related offences in the area of Winnipeg Street and 2nd Avenue North. At about 12:10 p.m., one officer observed white Ford F350 vehicle swerving and accelerating. The laser equipment indicated the vehicle was travelling well in excess of the posted speed limit so the officer attempted to flag the vehicle off the road. The officer had to step out of the lane to avoid being hit, but the truck slowed and stopped. The driver showed strong signs of impairment and was placed under arrest. The vehicle was searched and police located an assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine, as well as ammunition nearby and open liquor. The firearm was made safe and seized. Further investigation led to ten criminal charges against the driver, as well as three tickets under bylaw and provincial legislation.
