The Regina Police Service is advising the Regina public of a change in the status of the investigation into a 2010 triple homicide. The investigation into the HTOO/MAW homicides has been assigned to the Cold Case unit which continues the open status of the case and allocates the appropriate resources to maintain the ongoing work. The 50-thousand dollar reward, authorized by the Regina Board of Police Commissioners, continues.
On August 6, 2010, 31 year-old Gray Nay HTOO, 28 year-old Maw MAW and three year-old Seven June HTOO were found, deceased, in their home on Oakview Drive. The victims were Karen refugees who had lived in Regina for approximately two years, having moved from a refugee camp in Thailand. Since August 10, 2010, the investigation has been comprehensive, involving (at times) as many as 25 Regina Police Service members. A team of ten RPS members worked full time on the case as well as investigators from the RCMP, FBI and other law enforcement agencies. The RPS investigative team, working in conjunction with these agencies, utilized numerous investigative techniques to conduct the investigation, including the following:
- An RCMP member of Karen descent was assigned to the investigation from the start. This member has openly lived and worked as a police officer within the Regina Karen community for four and a half years.
- There have been over 200 interviews conducted since August 6, 2010, the majority of which have involved Karen-speaking people. Language was identified as a significant obstacle from the start of the investigation.
- The project team held information sessions for members of the Karen community during the course of the investigation. These sessions were meant as an opportunity to inform the Karen community about the Canadian Justice System as well as an opportunity for this community to share any information about the homicide with police.
- Over the past five years the investigative team has worked closely with the Ministry of Justice, Public Prosecutions Division.
- In May 2014, the Regina Board of Police Commissioners approved a $50,000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the homicide. To date, the reward has not generated such information.
The Regina Police Service continues to hold the murders of Gray Nay HTOO, Maw MAW and Seven June HTOO as a priority. This file and investigation has been assigned to the Regina Police Service Cold Case Coordinator. The Cold Case Coordinator’s responsibility will be to continue the investigation which will include completing outstanding investigative tasks and follow up on any new information that comes to light.
