The Regina Police Service Citizens’ Police Academy will be wrapping up its 100th class with a graduation ceremony on Thursday, April 2, 2015. Class #100 has 29 students enrolled, and started on January 14, 2015.
Citizens’ Police Academy started in Regina on March 26, 1986. The first class had 20 students in attendance, with ages ranging from a 17 year-old high school female to a 57 year-old retired male civil servant. Other students included a media representative, a cosmetologist, a teacher’s aide, a nurse from an alcohol and drug rehabilitation program, the wife of a Police Officer, a new Canadian from Ethiopia, and many others.
The purpose of the Citizens’ Police Academy is to foster better relations between the police and members of the community through education, understanding of police policies and practices. Included in the class is also the opportunity for a Ride-a-long with an officer, as well a meeting a Police Service Dog (PSD), and firearms training with the glock pistols.
