The Regina Police Service is reminding members of the public that they CAN make a difference when it comes to crime prevention. In fact, public adoption of simple crime prevention strategies makes a huge difference when it comes to reducing victimization and lowering crime rates – one well-lit doorstep, locked door or phone call at a time.
Daily and weekly analysis of crime trends in the City of Regina shows that crimes like Break and Enter, Theft from Motor Vehicle and Theft of Motor Vehicle are still occurring regularly. Further analysis often identifies the point of entry as an unlocked door, which means that these crimes are entirely preventable. Also, if you see any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, call police and report your observations. You may be preventing a crime or helping police to apprehend someone who has just committed a crime.
Here are some tips to ensure the security of your home, vehicle, and property:
– Do not leave your vehicle running, unattended, with keys in the ignition. This is the number one opportunity for auto theft, especially in winter weather.
– Park in well-lit areas and always lock your vehicle. Do not store garage door openers, spare keys to your home or vehicle or another family vehicle in your car.
– Consider buying a steering wheel locking device or other anti-theft device and use it, every time you park your vehicle.
– Do not leave valuables in plain sight, even if your vehicle is locked. Remember that your garage door opener or spare keys are “valuables” in the hands of a thief.
– Always lock your house when you leave; if you have an alarm system, use it. It is also good practice to lock your doors behind you, even when you are at home.
– Make it clear to any observer that your home is occupied; clear sidewalks of snow; empty your mailbox; keep a light on in your house and keep the exterior of your home well lit.
– If you are travelling, ask a trusted neighbour or friend to give your house that same “lived-in” look while you are away. Please don’t advertise your absence on social media sites; that information may be shared well beyond your circle of trusted friends and family.
– If you observe any criminal activity in your neighbourhood, report it to police. In an emergency, call 9-1-1. All non-emergency calls should go to 306-777-6500 and, if you are reporting suspicious activity, take note of details like clothing descriptions or license plate numbers. However, please don’t risk your own safety to get this information.
By taking simple steps to deter crime and safeguard property, Regina citizens play a key role in the safety of our community and the quality of life in our city. Make these crime prevention strategies part of your daily routine.
