The Regina Police Service is continuing its investigation into a fatal hit and run collision that claimed the life of a 27 year-old Regina male on Saturday night, October 4, 2014. The vehicle/pedestrian collision occurred at the intersection of Albert Street and Saskatchewan Drive. Police are still looking for the suspect vehicle and driver.
At approximately 8:36 p.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2014, a police patrol vehicle, heading north-bound on Albert Street, en route to an unrelated call, noted a vehicle parked across the southbound lanes of Albert Street near 11th Avenue. A person was lying on the roadway just south of the parked vehicle; the owner of that vehicle was parked there to prevent anyone from striking the injured person. When the officers assessed the scene they determined that the male lying on the road was deceased and that a collision had just occurred. Preliminary investigation indicated that the male, later identified as a 27 year-old Regina man, was one of two pedestrians crossing Albert Street from west to east, on the south crosswalk. It is alleged a vehicle ran the red light at Albert Street and Sask Drive and struck one of the males. The vehicle fled the scene. The officers immediately radioed a description of the fleeing vehicle to the Communications Centre and to other units, but area searches did not locate the suspect vehicle. The officers blocked traffic in order to preserve the scene and requested the Coroner as well as additional units, collision investigators and forensic identification members. The intersection was closed to traffic for approximately three and a half hours.
The deceased male has been identified as 27 year-old Rafiqul ISLAM, DOB: 1987-01-01, of Regina. His next-of-kin have been notified of his death.
Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the suspect vehicle, which is described as a dark-colored SUV type of vehicle. Given what investigators know so far about this collision, the front end of the vehicle would show noticeable damage.
