Police Advise Public of Suspicious Male

The Regina Police Service is advising the public of its investigation into an incident of a suspicious male, following an event in Northwest Regina this morning, Sunday, August 3, 2014.

At 11:48 a.m., on Sunday, August 3, 2014, police were dispatched to a house in the 1200 block of Baird Street, after two girls, ages seven and eight, reported that a male asked them to get into his car.  The girls were not touched or harmed; they went to a nearby house to ask for help and it’s not known which direction the male took when he left.  Both victims are from out of town and were visiting with extended family in Regina.  Preliminary investigation indicates that the girls had gone to the house of friend to ask her to play.  When they learned the friend was not at home, they turned to leave and saw a male in a car, whom they’d earlier seen on foot in the area.  According to the girls, the man asked them to get into the car to look for candy.  They turned back to the house they’d just left and asked the homeowner for help.  The girls described the male as Caucasian; with dark brown, short hair; eyeglasses and wearing a blue plaid shirt.  They described the vehicle as a four-door car, silver in colour, with a dent on the trunk.  Police have begun an investigation into this incident, but have not, at this time, identified a suspect or located the vehicle.  Police will re-interview the girls at the earliest opportunity to try to get more information.

While police still have questions in this ongoing investigation, this incident serves as a reminder that all parents should talk with their children about safety and involve them in planning what to do if a stranger approaches them.  In this case, the children immediately sought help by notifying an adult.  Although the motive of the male is unclear, police thought it best to advise the public of this event with the reminder to always be aware of surroundings, talk about safety plans and always contact police to report any suspicious activity.
