Two Regina youths, both 15 year-old males from Regina, have been charged with Theft of Auto in connection with an incident on Sunday, February 16, 2014.
Police were dispatched at 11:20 p.m. to the 400 block of Froom Crescent for a report of a vehicle which had just been taken. The vehicle, an Olds Intrigue, had been left running with the keys inside. The complainant believed a grey or black SUV had dropped off the suspect minutes before the vehicle was stolen. The SUV, a Ford Escape, was located and confirmed to be stolen. The Olds Intrigue was found, abandoned, in an alley in the 1300 block of Athol Street. A canine team followed tracks leading away from the vehicle and found two male youths nearby. Further investigation led to charges against both male suspects.
The names of the youths cannot be made public in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Both youths are jointly charged with Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000 [355(b) CC]; Theft of Motor Vehicle [333.1(1) CC], in the case of the Olds Intrigue. In addition, one of the youths faces a charge of Theft of Auto [333.1(1) CC] in connection with the theft of the Ford Escape; and two charges of Fail to Comply with court ordered condition [137 YCJA]. Both males appeared in Youth Court at 9:30 a.m. today, Tuesday, February 18, 2014.
The Regina Police Service encourages vehicle owners to practice good crime prevention with respect to their property. Do not leave a vehicle running, unlocked and unattended. Even when stolen vehicles are recovered, there is often considerable inconvenience to the owners and sometimes property damage to the vehicles. Prevention really is the best practice!
