The Regina Police Service has concluded an investigation into a collision that occurred on February 15th, 2013, at 11th Avenue and Hamilton Street in which a 50 year-old woman was struck by a sign that had been hit by a transit bus. The female victim died in March as a result of her injuries.
At the time, police confirmed that the collision occurred at about 5:22 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2013 at a bus stop on 11th Avenue at Hamilton Street. The preliminary investigation indicated that a Regina Transit bus was travelling eastbound on 11th Avenue at Hamilton Street when it struck a pole in the 1900 block of 11th Avenue. The pole was knocked over and struck a 50 year old female who was standing at the bus stop.
Police have carried out a thorough investigation in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner, SGI and in consultation with the Crown. As a result, there has been a charge laid against the City of Regina Transit Corp Service Department and Equipment, under the Vehicle Equipment Regulations Act [section 22(3) per 113 per 287(1)]. The charge is “Fail to maintain a brake system with mechanical components that are secure, functional or not excessively worn or misaligned”. This charge or SOTI (Summary Offence Ticket Information) carries a voluntary payment of $770.00 or a court date.
The Regina Police Service has met with the family of the victim to advise them of the outcome of this investigation. The outcome of the collision: the death of the victim and loss to her family and community, is very tragic. The six-month investigation was comprehensive and thorough with the result that police did not find any evidence of criminal wrongdoing in this case.
