Two males, ages 19 and 23, are in custody following a weapons complaint and special teams callout in the 400 block of Edward Street today. The following is brief chronology of the incident, which involved Patrol, Canine, Crisis Negotiators and Special Weapons and Tactics teams, as well as on-scene command at a mobile command centre.
– This incident began at approximately 4:17 a.m. today, Sunday, July 21, 2013, when the RPS Communications Centre received a 9-1-1 call reporting a firearms incident. The male complainant indicated he’d had a gun pointed at him and he was threatened by two other males. The victim was able to escape and call police. Patrol members responded and established a safety perimeter. It was determined that there were eight people inside the house. Traffic was not permitted in the 400 block of Edward Street and the west alley. Traffic flow continued as usual on 1st Ave. North and 2nd Ave. North.
– By 9:00 a.m., police had convinced four males to exit the house. These individuals were taken into custody without further incident. At this time, there is no evidence to indicate they were anything other than potential witnesses to the event.
– Shortly after 9:15 a.m., there was a request for the additional resources of the Crisis Negotiation Team and SWAT, as well as an on-scene mobile command centre and Inspector in charge.
– As the result of continued negotiation, at approximately 1:00 p.m., two females left the house and were taken into custody without incident. The remaining occupants of the house, two males, emerged at approximately 2:07 p.m. and 2:10 p.m. They were taken into custody without further incident. Police checked the house to ensure there was no one else inside.
It is fortunate that there were no injuries associated to this incident. The Regina Police Service thanks the public for its patience and co-operation and reminds residents that the goal of every tactical call is to achieve an outcome that protects the lives and safety of all involved: the public, the police and even the suspects themselves. The investigation into this matter is continuing. It is not known at this time what charges, if any, will result.
