This Sunday, July 21st is another Saskatchewan Roughriders home game and once again, the Regina Police Service will have additional members assigned to managing vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the area of Mosaic Stadium. The Regina Police Service has made changes this season to accommodate the anticipated larger crowds for the home games during the 2013 Roughrider season.
One issue that requires further public education is that of exit from the grounds at the Brandt Centre. Many fans park on the Brandt Centre/Exhibition Grounds for Rider home games, but fans experienced some traffic congestion (and likely some frustration) at the first home game of the regular season, when they found the exit at Elphinstone Street closed. It is important to note that there will be no vehicle traffic permitted to exit from the Exhibition Grounds onto Elphinstone Street – across from the Lawson Aquatic Centre and Fieldhouse. Vehicle traffic should head west toward the exit at 11th Avenue and Lewvan Drive. The exit from the Exhibition Grounds at Princess Street onto Dewdney Avenue is also a possibility but will become congested quickly. The preferred exit from the Brandt Centre parking lots is 11th Avenue and Lewvan Drive.
As indicated in earlier news releases, there will be no vehicle traffic allowed on the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Retallack Street. Access will be limited to local residents only. Fans and motorists will find road closures on the 1500 block of Retallack Street at Dewdney Avenue ; 9th Avenue at Retallack Street and 10th Avenue at Retallack Street. These closures will further restrict westbound vehicle traffic on 9th Avenue and 10th Avenue at Retallack Street. There will be additional “No Parking” zones on 9th Avenue, east of the stadium, prior to, during and after football games. These zones are necessary to expedite City Transit and to maintain an emergency vehicle corridor for police, fire and EMS should the need arise. Any vehicles parked in these “No Parking” zones will be towed from the area.
The increased capacity of Mosaic Stadium necessitates modification to traffic-flow plans for the 2013 season. There will be more officers directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic as people exit the area around the stadium. Police are asking motorists and pedestrians to follow directions, have patience and be courteous to other users of the road. Enjoy Game Day and be safe!
