Five young males: two 14 year-old and three 16 year-olds, face a total of thirty charges as the result of investigation into thefts and damaged vehicles on the weekend.
On Saturday, June 29, 2013, at about 4:35 a.m., police were dispatched to the area of Laval Drive and McMaster Place for a report of a suspicious vehicle. The complaint indicated the occupants of the vehicle were smashing the mirrors off of cars parked on the street. Police arrived in the area and located a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description turning from University Park Drive onto Arcola Avenue. The officers stopped the vehicle and ordered the occupants to get out. Police found a baseball bat in the vehicle as well as a numerous items that, upon investigation, turned out to be stolen from various yards and vehicles in the area. Police also located four vehicles in the area that had damage to side mirrors. Investigation led to charges against each of the occupants of the vehicle: two 14 year-old males and three 16 year-old males. Police left information for the vehicle owners and are attempting to locate the owners of the property located which includes: a camera, a laptop, two pairs of sunglasses, a stepping stone and solar powered lights.
The youths cannot be named in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Each of the males is charged with four charges of Mischief under $5,000 [430(4) CC]; Theft under $5,000 [334(b) CC]; and Possession of Stolen Property under $5,000 [355(b) CC]. The five will be in Youth Court on August 12, 2013.
The Regina Police Service maintains an aggressive Theft from Auto initiative in attempt to reduce the number of theft-from-auto incidents. This initiative involves officers assigned to theft-from-auto investigations, tactical analysis of these incidents, partnerships with other agencies and public education to help prevent thefts from autos in our community.
