The Regina Police Service has begun a death investigation after an in-custody death that occurred this morning, May 23, 2013. A 37 year-old Regina male is deceased. Notification of his family is underway at this time.
At 5:08 a.m., Thursday, May 23, 2013, police were dispatched to Nollet Avenue for a report of a sick or injured person. The caller described a male partially clothed, yelling and running. Police were dispatched immediately and, shortly after their arrival, they requested EMS. The male was taken into custody but was transported to hospital by EMS based on the observations of the emergency responders at the scene. The male’s condition deteriorated while en route to the hospital. He was pronounced deceased in hospital at 6:13 a.m. Police are holding the scene until further investigation is carried out.
The Regina Police Service is now conducting an investigation into this death. Because the death occurred while the male was in police custody, an independent observer will be appointed by the Ministry of Corrections and Policing. Police have already conducted some interviews with neighbours and potential witnesses; everyone who had contact with the deceased, including police, will be interviewed as part of the investigation.
