The Government of Saskatchewan proclaimed the week of May 5 to 11, 2013 as Saskatchewan Missing Persons Week. The theme will be dispelling common myths and each day of the week will highlight and dispel a myth about missing person situations.
Myth 2: You have to report to the police jurisdiction wherever that person went missing from.
Fact: REPORT TO YOUR NEAREST POLICE STATION
In discussions with families and communities, a common question is: “Which police service should a report be made to when someone has gone missing from their home community or in a location not near family or friends?” The person who makes the report is not expected to know where the missing person has gone or which police service would be most relevant. The first and most important step should be to report the concern about the missing person to the nearest police service to initiate action. Investigators may then extend the investigation to different jurisdictions.
There is a group of cold case investigators who meet bi-annually in Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewan Association of Cold Case Investigators share information and knowledge between agencies.
