Three Regina males are facing charges after investigation into a sexual assault over the weekend which, in turn, led to a conclusion in a November, 2012, taxi driver robbery and assault case.
On February 3, 2013, at 4:55 a.m., police were dispatched to the 2800 block of 7th Avenue to investigate a possible sexual assault. A 27 year-old female told police she had run away from a nearby residence where she had been sexually assaulted and prevented from leaving. She indicated that her friend, a 25 year-old female, was still in the residence. The victim was unsure of the address of the house she’d run away from, but a police canine unit was able to follow a track back to a residence on MacKenzie Way. There, police found another female, a 25 year old woman who also claimed she was sexually assaulted. Police located and arrested two males in the house, without incident. Further investigation into this incident led to charges against the two males, related to the forcible confinement and sexual assault of the two females. Police also had indication that a third male had just left the residence on MacKenzie Way.
One of the suspects in custody, a 25 year-old male, was also a suspect in a robbery which occurred on November 8, 2012, in which a 46 year-old taxi cab driver was beaten and robbed by two males. Police learned that a vehicle had left the scene of the sexual assault on MacKenzie Way and updates on radio indicated the vehicle was being driven in an erratic manner. A citizen complainant was able to give police a license plate number, from which police got the address of the registered owner. That led other patrol units to a house in the 500 block of Forgie Bay. Patrol units set up a perimeter and attempted to make contact with the suspect inside. Eventually, after a phone conversation with a patrol Staff Sergeant, the suspect exited the house and was taken into custody without incident. This individual, a 21 year-old male, was charged in connection with the November, 2012, robbery and also faces a charge of Driving While Disqualified.
In relation to the February 3, 2012, sexual assault file, there are three males charged. Twenty-five year-old Christian KARURANGA, DOB: 1987-03-15, of Regina is charged with Forcible Confinement [279 (2) CC]; Sexual Assault with a Weapon [272 (a) CC] and Assault with a Weapon [267 (a) CC]. Thirty-one year-old Nicolas Antonio MANN, DOB: 1981-12-20, of Regina, is charged with Forcible Confinement [279 (2) CC]; Sexual Assault [271 CC] and Assault [266 CC]. Twenty-one year-old Zabur Bakari ABDALLA, DOB: 1992-01-01, of Regina is charged with Driving While Disqualified [259 (4) CC].
In relation to the November 8, 2012, taxi robbery file: there are two males charged. Twenty-five year-old Christian KARURANGA, DOB: 1987-03-15, of Regina is charged with Robbery [343 (b) CC]. Twenty-one year-old Zabur Bakari ABDALLA, DOB: 1992-01-01, of Regina is charged with Robbery [343 (b) CC].
The three accused made court appearances in Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2013.
