The Regina Police Service is once again encouraging the public to practice good crime prevention when it comes to the issue of auto theft. Regina Police statistics show that, so far in 2012, seventeen percent of all vehicles stolen in this city had keys inside. The total number of vehicles stolen (to the end of August) is 737. Police are using several different ways to get the message out: lock your car and take your keys with you.
So far this week, the Police Service has utilized digital billboard advertising (nine locations throughout the city to September 30th), a Crime Stoppers episode on CTV, a ride-along with the Stolen Auto Unit for a Leader-Post reporter; a ride-along with Stolen Auto for the RPS Social Media Officer (real-time posts and tweets) and a presentation to the Board of Police Commissioners and follow-up media interviews. Tomorrow, Thursday, September 27, 2012, the Regina Police Service is holding one more public education event at the University of Regina, in co-operation with the U-of-R Students’ Union, U-of-R Campus Security and SGI.
The event will provide students and staff at the University of Regina with information on how to better safeguard vehicles. At 2:00 p.m., police officers will assist personnel from SGI in handing out steering wheel locking devices, provided by SGI. When all of the devices on hand are gone, SGI will provide a limited number of vouchers that will enable students to pick up a free steering wheel locking device by visiting Campus Security.
