The Crown has withdrawn one charge and laid another against a Regina man and woman charged in connection with the alleged abuse of two female children. The death of one of the victims, a four year-old girl, has resulted in charges of manslaughter against the two co-accused. The other victim, a two year-old girl, remains in hospital and is said to be improving.
This investigation began on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at approximately 12:10 a.m. Police were dispatched to a Regina hospital for a report of a four year-old girl who’d been brought to hospital in an unresponsive state. The child was revived but died the evening of August 2, 2012. The preliminary investigation into this case indicated the four year-old was the victim of abuse and neglect. The investigation also led to the discovery of a two year-old female sibling to the first victim. She was also taken to hospital for treatment of suspected abuse and neglect and remains in hospital. The two caregivers to the children, a 35 year-old female and a 37 year-old male, were taken into custody on August 1, 2012 and, prior to the death of the four year-old, were charged jointly with two counts of Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm. Today, one charge of Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm was withdrawn and a new charge laid.
The co-accused are 37 year-old Kevin Eric GOFORTH, DOB: 1975-05-30, and 35 year-old Tammy Lynn GOFORTH, DOB: 1976-09-14, both of Regina. Kevin GOFORTH and Tammy GOFORTH are jointly charged with Manslaughter (four year-old victim) [236 CC] and Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm (two year-old victim) [221 CC]. The accused made a first court appearance on the new charge in Provincial Court at 2:00 p.m. today, Thursday, August 9, 2012.
