Members of the media are invited to meet with members of the Regina Police Service Explosives Disposal Unit, who are on training this week. A recent discovery of military ordnance in Regina, combined with the popularity of television shows about antiques and collectibles, points out the need for continuous public education on the subject of old military ammunition.
On May 28, 2012, the Regina Police Service was made aware of an ad placed by an individual, selling an old artillery shell. A member of the Explosives Disposal Unit went to the individual’s house in northwest Regina and, with the owner’s co-operation, took away an artillery shell measuring about 20″ long, with a diameter of approximately 3.5″. The owner had discovered it in a yard clean-up at a property in the 400 block of Montreal Street. The Explosives Disposal Unit conducted tests to determine whether or not the device was inert. The tests confirmed that the shell was not a threat to public safety.
The Regina Police Service Explosives Disposal Unit reminds Regina residents that it is impossible to tell if old military ordnance is safe just by looking at it. The best advice; if you discover an old shell, grenade or anything that looks like ammunition; is to call the Regina Police Service at 777-6500. Police will assess the item and request in the necessary resources (EDU or military experts) in order to dispose of it safely.
Members of the media who are interested can meet with members of the EDU at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, June 7, 2012 in the 5000 block of Wascana Parkway, southeast of the SIAST Wascana campus.
