The Regina Police Service is asking for the public’s co-operation in securing property now that Spring has arrived. The warmer weather prompts most people to spend more time outdoors and that can include criminals looking for easy targets. Spring traditionally brings an increase in property crimes like Break and Enter, Theft from Auto and Mischief.
From April 18th to May 23rd. there have been 56 reported break and enters to garages throughout Regina. In almost half (26) of these incidents, the culprits gained entry to the garage through an unlocked garage door. In nine cases, the perpetrators first broke into cars or trucks parked on the road or driveway, found a garage door remote and then used the remote to gain entry to the garage. In some of these cases, the suspects then stole items for unlocked cars inside the garages.
As suggested in the description of these events, there are a number of preventive measures that can be used to deter these criminals. Everyone who owns a garage should make sure the building is locked after using any of the doors. Check your vehicles to make sure they are also locked. And, remove valuables from inside your vehicle; this includes remote garage door-openers and spare keys to the house or other vehicles.
Police are asking Regina residents to be observant and report any suspicious activity to police by calling 777-6500. Anyone who sees a crime in progress should call 9-1-1. Anyone, who has information pertaining to a garage break and enter or theft from auto incident, should call 777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
