The Regina Police Service is introducing Online Reporting: a new way for Regina citizens to report some types of property crime. Effectively immediately, the public will be able to use a web-based system to file incident reports (such as garage break & enters or thefts from auto) online at their convenience, instead of phoning or making an in-person visit. RPS Online Reporting does not remove the afore-mentioned options; it simply adds one more method of reporting that may be more convenient for some residents. It should be noted that RPS Online Reporting will not be used for incidents that require dispatch of police cars to the scene. Examples of these would be in-progress crimes, crimes with identified suspects or crimes against persons.
The introduction of Online Reporting is the result of a goal in the Regina Police Service Strategic Plan that the Service, “use electronic technology to improve communication and service delivery by researching, developing and implementing secure web-based reporting for citizens”. The project is now in the implementation phase.
Reginaresidents can access the secure site by visiting www.reginapolice.ca and clicking on the “Online Reporting” icon. Once the person has chosen the applicable incident type to file, he or she will be guided through a step-by-step reporting process that has been adapted specifically for the Regina Police Service. The reporting party is asked the same information that a call-taker or police officer would request. The process takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes; it is free of charge and the reporter is e-mailed a copy of his or her statement once it has been reviewed by an RPS member. The report itself is transferred to the RPS Records Management system and receives the same investigation and statistical analysis as if the report had been received over the phone or in person. This system of web-based reporting is in use by a number of police services across Canada and theUnited States.
