Six children, between the ages of 12 and 14, have been charged with Break, Enter and Commit Mischief after a break-in at Mosaic Stadium late last night. Four other children, who were present at the scene, were released, without charge, to the care of family members.
At approximately 11:44 p.m. on Sunday, July 17, 2011, police officers were dispatched to Mosaic Stadium for a report of children entering and leaving the facility. At the scene, police initially located a group of four children, ages 8, 9, 11 and 12. Further investigation led to the discovery of a damaged golf cart. Police then found six more youths: a 14 year-old male, 13 year-old female, 13 year-old male and three 12 year-old males, all within Mosaic Stadium. All were taken into custody by the officers. Investigation led to the discovery of further damage in a number of areas of the stadium including a smashed glass door, a kerosene lamp lit and left unattended, freezers that had been opened with food removed and spoiled, assorted cans and bottles of beverages opened and strewn about and numerous other food items opened and scattered. The damage is estimated to be approximately $4000. The first four children, including those under 12, were released into the custody of family members. The other six were charged in connection with this incident.
The accused cannot be named in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They are a 14 year-old male, 13 year-old female, 13 year-old male and three 12 year-old males Each has been charged with Break, Enter and Commit Mischief [348(1)(b) CC]. In addition the 13 year-old female was charged with Possession of Stolen Property under $5000 [355(b) CC]. The accused will make their first court appearances on these charges in Youth Court, Monday, July 18, 2011, at 2:00 p.m.
