The Regina Police Service is reminding Regina residents of the provision in the City’s Traffic Bylaw 9900 that prohibits parking on any street for a period longer than 24 hours, except on Saturdays and holidays. Contravention of section 35(5)(c) occurs year-round, but it becomes a bigger problem in the winter when City workers need to plow streets. This winter has brought more than the usual amount of snow.
The City of Regina has a system that prioritizes the City’s 1100 kilometres of roadway for snow removal. This system designates emergency routes and main thoroughfares as top priorities and then categorizes other streets, considering transit routes, connector routes and high-volume roadways in setting secondary and subsequent priorities. It is important that roadways be cleared of parked vehicles for snow removal. Vehicles left parked on city streets become snow-covered obstacles, which, over time, make roadways narrower, which, in turn, increases the potential for motor vehicle collisions.
Vehicle owners are advised that the Regina Police Service will be directing extra resources to enforcement of Section 35(5)(c) of the City’s Traffic Bylaw. Vehicles will be ticketed and, in some cases, seized and towed at the owner’s expense.
