A thirteen year-old boy faces eight criminal charges after a number of false 9-1-1 calls to the Regina Police Service on Monday, November 8, 2010.
At approximately 4:50 p.m., the Regina Police Service Communications Centre dispatched officers to the 800 block of Broad Street North after a young caller indicated he had seen a person stabbed and killed. Six officers and EMS were dispatched to the address given only to find there was no evidence of either a fight or an injured person and the residents of the house were unaware of any 9-1-1 call. There were also calls at 4:58 p.m. and 5:55 p.m. indicating emergencies including an assault in progress and an assault with a weapon. Police Communications officers were suspicious when the events reported did not match the caller’s demeanour and background noise, but the calls were taken seriously. At 10:47 p.m., there was a fourth call, this time indicating someone had been shot in the leg. The 9-1-1 call, like the earlier ones, was made from a cellular phone so the exact location of the caller was not available, only an approximate location. Police went to the area and through further investigation, located two boys, ages 11 and 13 at a residence on Lloyd Crescent. There was no sign of any of the events that had been reported in the 9-1-1 calls. Subsequent investigation led to charges against the 13 year-old male.
The boy’s name cannot be released in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is charged with four counts of Public Mischief [140 (1)(c) CC] and four charges of Conveying False Messages [372(1) CC]. The teen appeared in Youth Court at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2010.
