The Regina Police Service will have extra officers working tonight in anticipation of the Decentralized Dance Party. The idea of this mass, mobile party was developed during the 2010 Winter Olympics and involves a single DJ with an FM Transmitter and participants using battery powered radios or “boom boxes” tuned in to the D-J’s frequency. Organizers of the event say several similar dance parties have been held across the country and there are online invitations for such an event in Regina tonight.
The organizers of the Decentralized Dance Party note that the theme is that of “Canadian Pride”. They also take care to point out that alcohol is forbidden at the event because it takes place in public. That’s an encouraging sign for police, who will be monitoring the event to ensure that there are no breaches of law, especially with respect to safety of participants and the public, and protection of property.
Police remind Regina residents and visitors that the City has a noise bylaw which places limits on the type, amount and duration of noise caused by any person. Police will also take appropriate action to prevent or disrupt any crimes against persons or property during this event. It IS possible to have fun and declare pride in our country, at a large event, and remain within the law.
