Some Regina drivers may not be getting the message about cell phone use while driving. The Regina Police Service carried out a combined-services traffic initiative on Thursday, September 16, 2010, at 7th Avenue and Albert Street. Regina Police Service members were joined by RCMP traffic services members from Weyburn and Regina detachments, as well as C-P Rail police. Tickets issued show seatbelt infractions and cell phone use while driving to be the most common infractions.
In all, police issued 104 traffic tickets or SOTI’s (Summary Offence Ticket Information). Of that total, 37 were for seatbelt infractions and 29 tickets were issued for cell phones. The other categories include: Fail to comply with license restrictions – 2; Unregistered vehicle – 3; Suspended driver – 3; Other – 30.
There were also 23 vehicle inspection tickets and 26 light vehicle inspection tickets issued. Three Criminal Code charges were laid (Driving while prohibited, Impaired operation and Exceed .08). There were five vehicles seized and two impounded. The officers also executed five warrants during the course of the checkstop.
The Regina Police Service commends motorists who practice safe driving habits and encourages all drivers to comply with the law and respect the rules of the road.
