The Regina Police Service is reminding members of the public to use passwords and other available security settings to protect against unauthorized access to wireless internet services. Many households with more than one computer use a wireless router that enables internet access anywhere in the house. Residents are reminded that this wireless internet access extends beyond the property boundaries, sometimes for hundreds of feet and, consequently, may also be accessed by unauthorized users, unless the homeowner enables and uses security features like passwords.
This reminder comes after the recent arrest of an individual who is alleged to have breached court ordered conditions not to use or possess any computers or other devices capable of accessing the internet. It is alleged this person was accessing wireless internet service, likely that of a neighbour without that person’s knowledge. In early August, police were made aware that a male, who is subject to a number of court-ordered conditions, had breached the condition requiring him to meet with his probation officer. Police attended to his residence on August 6, 2010 and exercised the court-imposed condition allowing police to search his residence. It is alleged this individual had a computer device allowing him to access the internet. It is further alleged this person breached other conditions of his release. The 31 year-old male was subsequently charged with three breaches.
Thirty-one year-old Del Joseph Aime REVET, DOB: 1979-01-11, is charged with Breach of Probation (possess or use computers) [733.1(1) CC]; Breach of Prohibition Order (attending parks or playgrounds/near children under 14 years of age) [161(4) CC]; and Breach of Prohibition Order (position of trust or authority over children under 14 years of age) [161(4) CC]. REVET made his court appearance on these charges in Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, August 9, 2010.
