A 34 year-old Regina male made his first court appearance today on charges relating to an alleged assault on a police officer, which occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 25, 2010.
At approximately 2:28 a.m. on Sunday, July 25, 2010, the Regina Police Service Communications Centre received a call from a male saying a female had cut his throat with a sword. The call taker could not elicit much more information from the caller, although fighting could be heard in the background. When officers arrived, they encountered a male, who exited the house and became confrontational with police. The male subject continued to defy police demands that he show his hands. A large dog came out of the back yard and charged at the officers. One officer shot at the dog, possibly three or four shots, to prevent officers from being injured. At that point, it is alleged the male subject tackled the officer and made repeated attempts to reach for the officer’s firearm. Three other officers subdued the male, who was assessed by EMS because of his highly agitated state. The officer was taken to hospital for treatment; he received a dislocated shoulder and a number of bruises and minor cuts in this incident. He will not be returned to active duty for a number of weeks.
Thirty-four year-old Shayne Michael RAFFARD, DOB; 1975-08-31, of Regina is charged with Attempting to Disarm a Peace Officer [270(1) CC]; Obstructing a Peace Officer [129(a) CC]; and Assaulting a Peace Officer [270(1)(a) CC]. RAFFARD made his first court appearance on these charges in Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 26, 2010.
