Released September 2, 2009
The Traffic Focus of the Month for September 2009, in Regina, is traffic offences in school zones and playground areas, with particular emphasis on speeding violations.
Since the start of September, the Regina Police Service has been targeting school zone, and playground zone, offences. Throughout September, police officers will be enforcing speed limits in these zones and reminding motorists that school and playground speed limits of 40 km/h are in effect from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., seven days a week, all year long, not just during school months. Fines for speeding in School Zones/ Playground Zones begin at $210.00; fines increase depending on the speed.
It should be noted a vehicle traveling at 60 km/h, instead of the 40 km/h limit, needs an extra 20 meters to come to a stop. This is a critical safety issue in areas where there are children and other pedestrians present.
The Traffic Focus of the Month is part of a continuing campaign to increase public awareness and to enhance traffic safety in Regina. The Regina Police Service commends motorists who practice safe driving habits and encourages all drivers to respect the rules of the road. Remember, being more cautious, obeying all traffic laws and being a safe, courteous driver will protect our children and make Regina a safer community for all.
