Released December 20, 2011
On Monday, December 19, 2012, the Regina Police Service received two reports of scams within less than 24 hours of each other. In both incidents, the scam was stopped before any money was sent.
The Prize Lottery Scam occurs when the victim is contacted via phone and told that they have won a lottery or prize. The catch - in order to claim the prize, the victim must send money to the scammer in order for the prize to be released. The majority of fraud scams request money to be transferred using a money transfer service.
The Regina Police Service would like to remind the public:
Never send money via money transfer to a stranger.
Do not use a money transfer service to buy items online.
Beware of deals that are "too good to be true".
Remember, legitimate lotteries do not require a winner to pay any fees up front, such as taxes or a security deposit before receiving a prize. Carefully examine the terms and conditions of any lottery before entering it.

Released December 13, 2011
Three young persons have been arrested and an investigation is underway into a robbery in east Regina this morning (December 13th). A vehicle involved in the robbery was followed out of the city and then back into Regina with the incident coming to a close after police surrounded a townhouse residence on 15th Avenue. In all six people were taken into custody, but it isn't known, at this time, the involvement (if any) of three of the individuals detained.
The incident began when police were dispatched at 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, for a report of a robbery. Preliminary investigation indicated a 19 year-old male had just parked his vehicle near his home on Arens Road when he was approached by two male suspects. One was described as carrying a knife; the other was reported to have a firearm. The suspects demanded the keys to the vehicle, a silver Grand Prix, and then left the area westbound, following a red Ford Focus, also believed to be a stolen vehicle. The victim was not physically harmed in the incident.
A short time later, police spotted both vehicles in the area of University Park Drive and Quance Street. The Grand Prix was abandoned and the Ford Focus fled eastbound, toward the City limits. While some officers followed the fleeing vehicle, others remained to search the area and located a male hiding nearby. The male, a 17 year-old, was taken into custody without incident. The fleeing Ford left the City heading east and was followed by police back into Regina. It was later located in the 2700 block of 15th Avenue. Further investigation and the belief that two suspects in the robbery were inside a resident in the 2700 block of 15th Avenue led police to set up a perimeter in the area. Traffic was diverted on Albert Street between College and 14th Avenues and on 15th Avenue between Rae and McIntyre Streets. No residents were evacuated, but police advised residents, business owners and a nearby school of the situation. Additional police resources, including Crisis Negotiators and Special Weapons and Tactics members were deployed to the scene. In all, there were about 30 police officers and personnel present.
Between 9:40 a.m. and 10:05 a.m. (approximately), a total of five people exited the residence and were taken into custody without incident. Among those apprehended were two suspects matching the descriptions of suspects involved in the robbery and possession of stolen auto incident. They are a 14 year-old female and a 16 year-old male. It is not clear, at this time, if the other individuals in the residence, an adult female and two adult males, had any involvement in these matters.
Investigation is ongoing with charges pending the outcome of the investigation. At this time, police have not recovered any weapons in connection to these incidents.
The Regina Police Service would like to thank the public for its patience this morning, particularly with respect to road closures.

Released December 5, 2011
1) The Regina Police Service recommends the following smart practices to protect your vehicle and its contents:
- Do not leave your vehicle running, unattended, with keys in the ignition. This is the number one opportunity for auto theft in winter weather.
- Park in well-lit areas and always lock your vehicle. Do not store spare keys to your vehicle or another family vehicle in your car.
- Consider buying a steering wheel locking device or other anti-theft device and use it, every time you park your vehicle.
- Do not leave valuables in plain sight, even if your vehicle is locked. This is especially important now that people are doing Christmas shopping and may think it safe to leave gifts and other purchases unattended in a vehicle. Remove all valuables from your vehicle.
2) In addition, the Regina Police Service recommends the following strategies to protect your home:
- Always lock your house when you leave; if you have an alarm system use it. It is also good practice once you've entered your home, to lock your doors behind you.
- Make it clear to any observer that your home is occupied; clear sidewalks of snow; empty mailboxes; keep a light on in your house and keep the exterior of your home well lit.
- If you are travelling during the Christmas season, ask a trusted neighbour or friend to give your house that same "lived-in" look while you are away.
- If you observe any criminal activity in your neighbourhood, report it to police. If you can do so safely, take note of details like clothing descriptions or license plate numbers and report this information to police.
3) When making purchases or using an Automated Banking Machine (ABM), always remember to safeguard your Personal Identification Number, or PIN. Remember to use your free hand to shield the keypad as you enter your PIN. Check your financial statements carefully and report any irregularities to the appropriate authorities. If you are making online purchases, be cautious. Don't let your enthusiasm for a good deal override your common sense; deal with reputable companies, use secure payment options and don't be bullied by "limited time offers" into making hasty purchases.
With all of the extra activity and preparations for the holiday season remember to secure your vehicle, home, property and financial information. Make these crime prevention strategies part of your daily routine.
