The Regina Police Service Canine team members are the only full-time members of the Emergency Services section. Each team member is partnered with and works exclusively with his own dog. All of the dogs are German Shepherds, except for two Belgian Shepherds. Team members and dogs initially go through a standard 16-week training period and then participate in ongoing training throughout the year. The Canine Unit’s primary value is in its ability to support patrol. Canine members can be at the scene, almost immediately, of an armed robbery, auto theft, break and enter or weapons offence. The dogs add their tracking ability and speed to patrol investigations and often assist in apprehending suspects. Canine members also visit schools regularly and do demonstrations for community groups. It’s important to note that the dogs go home at the end of each shift with their human partners. Training never seeks to erase the dogs’ naturally social behaviour. Even though each dog functions as a highly-trained member of a team, each dog is also a pet, companion and family member.

K9 Team

Sgt. Hayden and PSD Mika - 16th year service with the RPS, 10th year as a canine handler. I am currently the Canine coordinater and am working with my fourth dog PSD Mika. Mika is a four year old male German Shepard.

Cst. Gunderson and PSD Juno - member with RPS since January of 2000.  In the K-9 section since November of 2003.  PSD Juno is Cst. Gunderson's second police dog.

Cst. Tunison and PSD Razor - 8th year of Service with the RPS, 1st year of service with the K-9 section.

Cpl. Kuffner and PSD Navro - 11th year of service with the RPS, 3rd year of service with the K-9 section.

Cpl. Hoedel and PSD Sumo - 12.5 years of service with the RPS, 7th year of service with the K-9 section.

Cst. Lorence and PSD KRUZ - 8th year with the Regina Police service. Prior to joining the Canine Section in June of 2008, I worked in Patrol as well as being a member of the Underwater Investigation and Recovery Team and the Crowd Control Unit.
My partner is PSD Kruz, a Belgian Malinois. Kruz, is a littermate to Cst Gunderson's dog PSD Juno. They were born in Dec 2006. Both dogs were named, as pups, by elementary school students in Regina in the Regina Police Service's "PSD Who?" competition. Their father, PSD Spike, is retired from the Regina Police Service Canine section. Their mother came from the Winnipeg Police Service puppy breeding program. She is 5 years old and lives in my home as well. Her name is Shadow.
When not at work, PSD Kruz enjoys playing with Shadow in the back yard and also "helping" with jobs around the house...which usually leads to yet more jobs around the house.
