Don't be a victim of auto theft. It's in everyone's best interest to prevent theft, which drives up the cost of insurance. Each year, vehicle thefts claims exceed 15 million dollars.

Basic Theft Protection

You can take these simple steps to make your vehicle a less likely target for thieves and vandals.

  • Install and activate an anti-theft device.
  • When leaving your vehicle, make sure the visible interior is empty, even if you're gone a short time. Tapes, CDs, coins, cigarettes and clothing left in plain sight will make your vehicle a target.
  • Never leave your keys in an unattended vehicle.
  • Do not hide or leave spare keys, drivers licence, or vehicle registration in the vehicle.
  • Never put your name or address on your house or car keys.
  • Always shut windows tight and lock all doors.
  • Park your vehicle facing the street, where anyone tampering with your vehicle is more likely to be seen.
  • If you leave your coat anywhere, take your keys with you.
  • Check your licence plates frequently, to ensure they have not been lost or stolen.

 

 

Anti-Theft Devices

There are many vehicle anti-theft devices on the market, varying widely in sophistication and cost. No device is foolproof. An experienced thief can overcome a device, given enough time and resources. Nevertheless, using any anti-theft device will help deter thieves. Here are some of the available options:

  • Steering wheel locking device - A metal bar that's attached to the steering wheel and secured with a key-lock system. The bar impedes a driver's ability to steer the vehicle. Remember, the bar doesn't stop someone from breaking into the vehicle to steal its contents.
  • Electronic disabling devices - These systems disable the ignition system. Some systems may be hidden to stall a thief or display with a code needed to "unlock" it while other systems have sensors that respond to touch and block entry points. Some systems protect in more than one way.
  • Alarms - Make a loud sound if a vehicle is tampered with. The features and sophistication of the alarms vary according to price. Whatever type of device you choose, it's a good idea to ensure the alarm includes visual and audio features. Do not use window stickers unless you have an alarm installed. Choose an alarm that you will use daily.
