The Regina Police Service will have additional resources in place the night of December 31, 2010, in anticipation of New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Extra officers are assigned for duty tonight; some will be conducting checkstops, looking for any breach of law, but focusing primarily on impaired drivers and other alcohol-related infractions. In addition, some officers will be assigned to crowd-control teams whose responsibilities will include visiting various venues where beverage alcohol is served. This year’s operational plan is similar to that used in previous years. Often the additional police presence, combined with programs like Ding In the New Year (free transit service), is enough to deter people from driving while impaired; however, police recognize that some individuals will still make poor choices, so enforcement is a necessary part of the public safety picture.
The Regina Police Service encourages everyone to enjoy New Year’s Eve celebrations, but ensure that you get to and from your party safely. Use designated drivers, taxis, Ding In the New Year; make your own choices, but choose safety. Make safety your first resolution of the New Year.
