Two male youths, ages 15 and 16, both of Regina, are facing a number of charges in connection with two incidents on Saturday, May 22, 2010. The youths were arrested, in separate arrests, just after 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, 2010.
The charges stem from investigation into two events: first, a robbery that occurred at about 3:45 a.m. in the 1400 block of Robinson Street, in which a 17 year-old male was sprayed in the face with a substance believed to be bearspray and robbed of clothing; and a shooting that occurred at about 4:06 a.m. in the 1100 block of Wascana Street, involving a 21 year-old male victim, who remains in hospital with a gunshot wound to the torso. Although the charges against the accused connect these two events, there are still no charges laid in connection with a fatal shooting the same night, in the yard of a residence on the 1400 block of Garnet Street. That incident, which resulted in the death of 21 year-old Jodi Lynn BRYANT, is still under investigation.
As a result of investigation into the robbery on Robinson Street and the shooting on Wascana Street, police investigators identified two male suspects. On May 27th, at about 7:08 p.m., patrol and plainclothes members located one of the suspects, operating a vehicle in Regina. Mindful of risk to public safety, at the earliest opportunity, patrol members activated emergency equipment and succeeded in stopping the vehicle in the 1500 block of Rupert Street. The 16 year-old male driver was taken into custody without incident. Just after 7:00 p.m., a second suspect believed to be involved in the same events was observed by police members walking in the area of 6th Avenue and King Street. This suspect, a 15 year-old male, was taken into custody without incident.
Neither of the accused may be identified in accordance with the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Both the 16 year-old and 15 year-old males are charged with Robbery while using a firearm [344(a) CC]; Attempted Murder [239 CC]; Assault with a Weapon (firearm) [267(a) CC]; Assault with a Weapon (baseball bat) [267(a) CC]; and Robbery [344(b) CC]. In addition, the 16 year-old is charged with Possession of Stolen Property [355(b) CC]. Both accused will appear in Youth Court on Monday, May 31st, at 9:30 a.m.
